Canvass Team Leader
at Empire State Pride Agenda in New York-New York City
Pride Agenda Summary: The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York?s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Our mission is to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families. Through our education, organizing and advocacy programs, we work toward creating a broadly diverse alliance of LGBT people and our allies in government, communities of faith, labor, all sectors of the workforce and other social justice movements to achieve equality for LGBT New Yorkers and the broader goals of social, racial and economic justice.
Position Summary: The Empire State Pride Agenda is seeking a committed, full time Canvass Team Leader for mid-May through mid-August. The Lead Canvasser will play an important role in winning marriage equality for LGBT New Yorkers though identifying supporters within key districts in a door-to-door canvass. The Canvass Team Leader will help mange a group of canvassers on a daily basis and will be the point person for the Canvassing Director when out in the field. The Lead Canvasser reports to the Canvassing Director.
Principal Duties:
The Canvass Team Leader will:
Serve as a direct communication line with potential marriage equality supporters.
Arrive an hour before the canvass team and help put together walk kits.
Assist in setting and maintaining goals for the canvass team.
Brief the canvass team about the day?s work and messaging.
Serve as the point person for the canvassing director while out in the field.
Identify marriage equality supporters through door-to-door canvassing.
Recruit enthusiastic supporters to be volunteers.
Manage and input canvass data.
Qualifications:
A strategic canvass lead who is detail-oriented, well-organized and willing to take direction. Strong leadership skills and experience leading a group.
Creative, has a sense of humor, able to think on your feet.
Canvassing experience required. High School diploma or GED with a minimum of one year relevant experience in electoral or community organizing and advocacy.
Committed to marriage equality and the mission of the Empire State Pride Agenda and to serving LGBT communities through community-based, straight/non-transgender ally and anti-racist organizing. Ability to relate to and work with a diverse audience.
High degree of computer literacy. Familiarity with the Voter Activation Network (VAN) and experience assembling walk kits preferred. Strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to meet and maintain set goals while working well in a team setting.
Ability to work flexible hours that includes nights, some weekends and travel throughout New York City. Familiarity with Queens is a plus.
Speaking fluency in Spanish or Korean desired.
Current Drivers License a plus, but not required.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and nonprofit sector.
