SUMMARY
We have an excellent opportunity for a Communications Director in our San Francisco, CA, office. The director is responsible for managing the national organization's branding, positioning and communications, integrated marketing and outreach strategy. The individual oversees the implementation of such strategies by spearheading public and media relations, corporate communications, web content, marketing, and creative services. The candidate serves as the expert counsel on protecting and enhancing the reputation of the brand, and for developing messages and imagery that encourages individuals, companies, and foundations to support the organization.

Under general direction from the deputy director, the Communications Director is responsible for the overall planning, organization and direction of Out & Equal's communications strategies and public information activities.

The Communications Director is also responsible for fostering and maintaining relationships with news media editors, reporters, other governmental elected officials and their staff, other communications directors, community leaders, donors and sponsors, and partner organizations involved with the organization.

Duties include but are not limited to:

- Planning, organizing, and directing overall communications strategies and public information activities for the organization;
- Participating in executive strategic planning with the executive management team and Board of Directors;
- Analyzing, developing, and articulating media policies;
- Keeping management and staff apprised of relevant current events on a daily basis;
- Coordinating, overseeing and attending press events;
- Overseeing internal and external communications and presentations through visual displays, production of newsletters and web sites, and occasional public events;
- Maintaining extensive and positive relationships with local media;
- Supervising the Media Relations Manager and all staff performing the duties associated with public information, video production, web site development and maintenance, photography, collateral support materials, and internal and external events;
- Developing and managing department budgets;
- Proactively pitch story ideas on a local and national level, seek out additional media opportunities, and coordinate local media sponsorships and funding for all Out & Equal program;
- Managing, planning, directing, controlling and implementing an aggressive communications program in the media markets, with an emphasis on Out & Equal programs, media advocacy and public relations support for fundraising events;
- Provide consultation and training for board and staff to ensure effective implementation of communications initiatives.

Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred), in public relations, journalism, communications or a related field, and a minimum of seven years experience with at least two years in a nonprofit organization, as well as a portfolio of journalism, public
- Experience managing a team, excellent communication skills, ability to handle multiple projects under deadline pressure, be detail and results-oriented, and have strong knowledge of budget processes;
- Comprehensive knowledge of media operations and expertise in the field of public relations and release of information for publication;
- Proven ability to develop communication strategies related to organizational policies in collaboration with a diverse team;
- Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of theories, principles and practices of journalism and mass communications as they relate to public information services;
- Experience working with elected officials and CEO-level leadership, an ability to work comfortably and efficiently under tight timelines, and strong, effective written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated experience producing high quality graphic materials essential;
- Knowledge of the latest advances in effective use of Internet technologies;
- High level managerial skills;
- Strong media relations experience, including media sponsorship negotiation and pitching to local TV, print and radio on an on-going basis;
- Develops and/or oversees the development of complex written reports and printed materials targeted for specific markets and promotion of the organization?s wide array of programs;
- Prepares and administers the budget of the Communications Department;
- Serves as official spokesperson for the organization;
- Performs related duties as required.


REQUIREMENTS
Must be familiar with the principles, policies and practices of marketing, public affairs, public and community relations, and public policy development and implementation; budget administration; supervision, training, employee and organizational development, leadership, team building, motivation and conflict resolution; effective marketing, communication and presentation techniques; business report writing; pertinent local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations; modern office systems; and marketing and communications software.

The ability to supervise and direct the work of managerial, professional, technical and clerical staff performing a variety of marketing, communication, and customer service functions; effectively train and evaluate staff; prepare and administer a department budget; apply collaborative work strategies and gain the cooperation of members of the public and employees at all levels of the organization; analyze issues and develop alternative solutions; prepare, analyze, and evaluate comprehensive marketing programs, communications approaches, and written reports with recommendations; make effective oral presentations to a variety of audiences; and establish and maintain positive working relationships with members of the public using principles of good customer service. In addition:

- Familiarity and comfort with the Mission and Vision of the organization, including knowledge of LGBT issues and practices in the workplace;
- Positive outlook, enthusiasm, and high energy;
- Be self-motivated, with ability to lead, as well as to function as a dependable team player;
- Good organizational and communication skills;
- Proficiency with MSWord, PowerPoint, Excel, PC and Mac;
- Excellent (oral/written/interpersonal) communication skills;
- Organized with attention to detail.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge of office procedures and practices, correct punctuation and grammatical usage, referencing methods, and the types and uses of office materials and machines. Strong knowledge of personal computers and various software, specifically MSWord, Access, Excel and Power Point. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports, to do both complex and routine clerical work effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions, to type 60 wpm, to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Advanced customer service communication skills. Demonstrated ability to multi-task. Knowledge of the LGBT community preferred, but not necessary.
